HVAC & home-service contractors

Google Ads and Local Services Ads for HVAC contractors

When a system dies in July, homeowners search Google and call whoever shows up first. Here is how the two Google ad types that put you there actually work, what changed for missed calls in October 2026, and how we run them for a flat $399/month.

Two different products: Search ads and Local Services Ads

Most HVAC companies that advertise on Google end up using both. They show in different places, charge in different ways, and need different setup.

How Local Services Ads charge HVAC contractors

Google charges for each valid lead you receive through the ad. Valid leads include an answered call (or a call you return and connect on), a text or email, a voicemail, and a booking request. You set an average weekly budget and a bidding mode; lead prices vary by location, job type and lead type, and Google filters invalid activity such as spam and duplicate contacts and may credit leads it later judges low quality.

The October 2026 change: starting October 1, 2026, a call you miss during business hours can be charged as a valid lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. If your phone system asks callers to press a key to reach a department, the timer starts after they press it. In practice, an unanswered phone now costs money as well as jobs.

Getting HVAC listed

HVAC (heating or air conditioning) is a supported Local Services category in the United States. Before your ad runs with the Google Verified badge you complete Google's onboarding checks, such as license or business registration, reviews where the category requires them, and billing setup. Google also offers pre-badge ads once the preliminary checks pass, ranked below fully verified providers.

Google is also bringing pay-per-lead options into Performance Max campaigns for eligible home-service categories, so how the campaigns are set up is changing. We keep up with that so you don't have to.

Search ads that work for HVAC

Search ads give you control Local Services Ads don't: exactly which searches you pay for, what the ad says, and where the click lands. For HVAC that usually means:

  • Separate campaigns for repair, replacement and maintenance, because the urgency, budget and landing page differ for each.
  • Negative keywords for job seekers, DIY parts and training searches, so you don't pay for clicks that will never book.
  • Call assets and ad schedules that match the hours someone can actually answer the phone.
  • A landing page per service with your phone number, service area and a short form, instead of sending every click to the homepage.
  • Conversion tracking on calls and forms, so bidding learns from booked leads and not just clicks.

What we handle for HVAC contractors

  • Local Services Ads setup help, service types, service area, budget and bidding, plus flagging low-quality leads through Google's lead feedback.
  • Search campaigns structured by service, with negative keywords and call assets.
  • Call and form conversion tracking, so you can see which campaign produced which lead.
  • A plain-English monthly report: leads, cost per lead and what we changed.

Management is $399/month flat. Ad spend is separate and paid directly to Google. See pricing details.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Google Search ads and Local Services Ads?

Search ads are keyword campaigns in Google Ads that charge per click and send people to your website or phone. Local Services Ads appear in their own unit in Google Search, let customers call, message or book you from the ad, and charge per valid lead instead of per click.

How are Local Services Ads charged?

Google charges for each valid lead: an answered call or a call you return and connect on, a text or email, a voicemail, or a booking request. You set an average weekly budget and a bidding mode, and Google filters invalid activity such as spam or duplicate contacts.

Do missed calls cost money on Local Services Ads?

They can. Starting October 1, 2026, a call you miss during business hours can be charged as a valid lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. If your phone setup asks callers to press a key to route them, the 20-second timer starts after they press it.

Is HVAC eligible for Local Services Ads?

Yes. HVAC (heating or air conditioning) is on Google's list of supported Local Services categories in the United States. You will need to pass Google's onboarding checks, such as license and business verification, before the Google Verified badge appears.

Can you manage Local Services Ads and Search ads together?

Yes. We set up and manage both, coordinate budgets and service coverage between them, and report leads from each in one place. Management is $399/month flat, and ad spend is paid directly to Google.
